Climbing to the Continental Divide! 6,355 Feet

Miss Kitty's saying for the day: When you want something you've never had, you've got to do something you've never done! (and I did - see below) Today was a day I had dreamed of, crossing the Continental Divide on bike! The divide was mile 25 of 48 and in those 25 miles we climbed about 3800 feet. We expected a bit more than just a sign - like a band playing or something! So, we congratulated ourselves and took lots of pictures.
Silver City mines copper - it was more reddish stone/sand than picture depicts. We passed this view while biking about 5 miles of "rollers"....almost didn't want to stop my decline to take picture...but I shall only pass this way but once....so put on those brakes!

New Mexico terrain seems different...sorta small scrubby greenery next to State Highway 90 - the mountains often more off in a distance. Note some snow still on top of mountains. It was only in the 30's when we started out this morning; our coldest morning. You do warm up fast climbing the mountains.

Hoping this pic show the steep incline and curves and the mountains changed to rocky at about 35 miles. As always, just when this body felt like it couldn't go any further....God threw in a FOUR mile DOWNHILL. We LOVED it!

Happy St. Patrick's Day from Bike Maintenance Pro Carol and Super Chef Linda (our guides).
Our evening meal - corn beef and cabbage!
Trials of the day:
  • Two lane highway, I'm heading East (down hill) on the white line...truck coming West and a car decides to pass the truck which means there is now a car in my lane heading towards me at probably 65 mph. There was a shoulder which was just a little rough, but without a problem the Forever Flyer went smoothly onto the shoulder. It was NOT a close call, just a quick scare!
  • Lots and lots of hills.

Blessings:

  • a reasonable cross wind - that wasn't constant!
  • Wonderful rollers and the one great downhill
  • beautiful weather
  • no flats (in my biking group)
  • great shoulders most of the time

Tomorrow is a day of rest - after eight long days of biking!

For those who are not Norwegian....Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  1. We hope your day of rest was a wonderful one. Thanks so much for sharing. I cannot believe you have the energy to write your thoughts after a full day of biking. Congratulations! We love reading your blog. Congratulations on crossing the Continental Divide. What an accomplishment especially considering the elevation! Praying for you and a cure.
