So today was a shorter day; 45 miles to Brackettville, Texas. Scenery was rather non-descript; but here are some fun events along the way:
I felt like a child as I stood on the side of the highway and watched in awe as jets landed and took off from Laughlin Air Force Base. Many times there were 6-7 planes in one little space in the sky. Some of the planes went over the highway so low I honestly could see the pilot! I kept trying to get a picture of the planes, but every time I took a picture, my camera screen was blank. My espionage mind went to work and I figured that these planes were probably preparing for a secret mission and there was something special about them that prevented the “enemy” from taking a picture! I was about ready to call Jody M. to inquire of this possibility when I finally got a picture of the tail of one of the jets….so I suspect that my picture taking skills are not quick enough rather than the secret mission planes I dreamed up. It was great fun to be a child in awe and I wished my grandson, Abey, would have been with me because he cannot get enough of planes.
From the looks of this roadside find, I believe HE no longer wears the pants in the family. I hope the dress his wife bought him fits!
Met up with Sid, who is retired from the air force and is biking from San Diego to St. Augustine and then up to North Carolina. He is raising money for the Shriners Hospital for Children. When I was watching the jets, he said they were practicing “touch and go”, which I think meant take off and landings. We chatted for a few miles as we biked the countryside. I’m sure our paths will cross again on our way to St. Augustine. By the way, haven’t seen Jim and Diane (the couple biking across the US) in two days now.
So this is what chip seal looks like. I think they make it with ¾ cup of medium size stones and ¼ cup of tar. It is not fun to ride on and some counties are worse than others. My 45 mile ride today was difficult for me and as I stared at the bumpy pavement and wished it would get better, God reminded me that I CHOSE this bumpy road I am on and that at the end of each day, I’m loving what I am doing. He then reminded me that many people are walking on a bumpy road in their life right now, and not by THEIR choosing. I immediately took my mind off the bumps in my road and prayed for a cure for spinal cord and remembered the bumpy path that John G., Jim W., Bruce T., and Treva are on and pray that God will carry them to smoother ground.
Our lodging tonight is Fort Clark Hotel. Fort Clark was once originally an army base and is now a retirement community for veterans. The hotel is open to the public. The grounds here are lovely and the rooms very adequate. It was 80ish today and a lovely warm evening with a full moon.
