A Sunday Ride on Saturday!

Today was like a Sunday afternoon ride in the park - but on Saturday. We began on the western edge of Phoenix and travelled 50 miles through Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Mesa. Although we were on very busy streets, Phoenix is biker friendly with wonderful bike lanes and for the most part, courteous drivers. We finished off our 60 mile day riding about 10 miles on a fairly rough road with some hairy traffic. I want you to meet my biking friends...JoAnn from PA. Jo Ann was the first woman I met on the tour so I call her my "first friend". We bike at about the same speed. (very, very fast!)

Katie, from WI, and I met for two seconds this past summer on a WI bike trip. Our biking styles are similar and I guess I could say eating styles are similar as here we are sharing chocolate pie!

Lynn is from Fla. She is holding "Baby Tennessee", who she adopted when she found her along the highway on a bike trip in Tennessee. Baby Tennessee rides every mile with us and when Lynn is your roommate you get to listen to Baby Tennessee say her prayers! Lynn and I haven't biked much together...but I'll catch her one of these days!

Kirby is from Chicago and we encourage each other on. We survived the night together at the Bates Hotel...and I've been sharing my long underwear with her cause she didn't bring any. Did I mention today is the first day I could ride w/o a jacket?

My bonus for arriving at the hotel at 2:30.....Sue Taken came for a visit. It was great having her meet the bikers in person and even greater that she and I were able to share supper together.

Things I'm Learning:

  • If you have to ride 90 miles; the last 10 are difficult....if you have to ride 60 miles; the last 5 are difficult....it must all be relative? Tomorrow we only ride 48 miles...but I hear it is mostly uphill!

  • Arizona has "cattle grates" and they are very dangerous for bikers and hard to spot very far in advance. (Google them if you don't know what they are)

  • The best part of riding up a mountain? The head winds can't reach you as you are usually between two mountains!

Things I am ever so thankful I brought with me:

  • Bought compression socks on the way to the airport....I LOVE them and have worn them every day - thank you Brad for suggesting them.

  • My computer....keeps me in touch with you.

  • The love and support of family and friends...keep those comments and emails coming!

  5. Your blog is so interesting and fun. It seems like I'm riding across the country with you...but we both know that would never happen. I give you so much credit. It seems that as tired as you are at the end of the day, the morning seems to bring excitement for what lies ahead. Thanks for taking us along on your trip. Glad you got to see Sue. I had to laugh at Bard's statement. I remembered that.

    Be safe....Salita

  6. Your friends back home are a bit confused! The Patti we knew always had to have the best room at the hotel, brought candles on vacation, nails done perfectly on ringed fingers to match lipsitck and georgeous cordinated outfits. Now we see you eating PBJ on the curb and staying in less than 1 star accomodations. Will the real Patti please stand up?
However, we all love you either way..perhaps just a split personality issue..ha ha
